Alexis Tsipras yesterday announced from Thiseio Square the creation of a new party under the name EL.A.S.: Hellenic Left Alliance.
The former prime minister revealed the name at the end of his speech, when, following a video presentation, a little girl wrote the party’s name on a piece of paper.
Presenting the party’s seven main pillars, he said that “we come from major struggles and collective experiences. And we move forward, with our eyes fixed on the future. We carry the legacy of the great currents of the progressive movement. Of EAM during the National Resistance, of PASOK during the early years of change, and of SYRIZA during the first Left-wing government.”
Before its official announcement, Alexis Tsipras’ party was polling in second place in voting intention surveys, behind New Democracy and slightly ahead of PASOK.
At the same time, according to News 247, the use of the word “Alliance” in the party’s name does not refer to pre-election political alliances with other parties and, as members of Alexis Tsipras’ team stress, the use of the specific term is addressed exclusively to citizens.
New Democracy commented that “Mr. Tsipras, from the name of his party to his ‘unfunded’ promises and toxic rhetoric, wants to take Greece many decades backwards.”
PASOK’s statement was issued in a similar tone. “The unveiling of Tsipras’ private party under the name ELAS confirmed just how old-fashioned is what has been heavily advertised for months as something ‘new’.”
