The Clinical Epidemiology Laboratory of the Nursing Department at EKPA has developed the TikTok Addiction Scale, the first global tool specifically designed to measure addiction to TikTok. This scale was published in the scientific journal AIMS Public Health.
The scale is the result of research conducted by Associate Professor Petros Galanis, PhD candidate Aglaia Katsiroumpa (Nurse, MSc), Laboratory Teaching Staff member Olympia Konstantatakopoulou, and postdoctoral candidate Ioannis Moysoglou (Nurse, MSc, PhD).
It provides researchers with a focus on TikTok usage, one of the most popular platforms worldwide. In Greece, over 3.5 million users are active on the app, with 33% under 25 years old. A significant portion spends 2-4 hours per day on TikTok (42%), and 38% exceed 4 hours. Globally, 20% of the population has a TikTok account, with higher usage in countries like the US (45%) and Europe (32%).
In Greece, more than 3.5 million users are on TikTok, with 33% of them being under 25 years old.
The need for this scale arises because TikTok differs significantly from other social media platforms and can lead to problematic usage, according to the researchers. The scale is both valid and reliable, consisting of a 15-question test that is simple and quick to complete (about 3-4 minutes). Based on responses, individuals are categorized into six addiction dimensions: constant involvement, mood swings, tolerance, withdrawal symptoms, conflicts, and relapse.
The scale can be used for the early identification of individuals at risk of addiction and to support the development of prevention and intervention strategies. However, it is not meant for diagnostic purposes. Only qualified healthcare professionals can diagnose individuals with problematic TikTok usage.
