The Economist has named Bangladesh the top country for 2024 due to its citizens overthrowing the “corrupt” Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who had ruled for 15 years, following protests that led to injuries and deaths of demonstrators at the hands of security forces. The newspaper selects the best country based on its improvements over the year, with the criteria not focusing on how “wealthy” or “happy” the country is.

Among the countries considered this year were Poland and South Africa, with the latest addition being Syria, following the overthrow of Assad.

The other four countries considered were Poland, for electing Donald Tusk; South Africa, for electing a government other than the African National Congress, which had ruled the country since the end of apartheid in 1994; Argentina, for its “most radical free-market experiment in the world” under its “anarcho-capitalist” president, Javier Milei; and Syria, for overthrowing Assad.

Greece was named the winner for 2023, as it “emerged from a long economic crisis” and re-elected a “sensible centrist government.”

According to the Economist, other countries that have won in recent years include Colombia for ending the civil war, Ukraine for resisting the Russian invasion, and Malawi for its democratization.
