The leader of the Democratic Rally (DISY), Annita Dimitriou, announced her recommendation to remove party MP N. Syka from the party ballot following allegations by his partner that he assaulted her.

Dimitriou shared her position on social media without naming him and stressed that, while fully respecting the presumption of innocence and the justice system, she sees voluntary renunciation of parliamentary immunity as necessary to ensure no shadow falls over the process. She highlighted that violence, especially against women, contradicts the fundamental values of the party.

Under the law, lifting parliamentary immunity requires a request from the Attorney General to the Supreme Court, as criminal prosecution cannot proceed against a sitting MP without this permission.

Although the alleged crime reportedly occurred in Greece, Article 5 of the Criminal Code allows prosecution in Cyprus under certain conditions.

The case came to light after a woman filed a report with the Limassol Police, stating that she had been assaulted by her partner a few days earlier during a trip abroad. Upon returning to Cyprus, she underwent medical examinations and filed an official complaint.

The final decision will be made by the party’s Political Bureau, which meets this Wednesday. Based on internal party elections held in Limassol, the next candidate in line is Andreas Michaelides.
