Developments in the femicide case outside the Agioi Anargyroi Police Station

The perpetrator responsible for the femicide of Kyriaki Griva is in hospital, intubated, and in critical condition. He allegedly attempted suicide in his cell, where he was found lying on the ground with marks on his neck.

The victim’s lawyer described the crime as premeditated, asserting that the perpetrator traveled from Arta to Athens with the specific intent to take Kyriaki’s life. Additionally, she disclosed the existence of a ticket that serves as evidence supporting this claim.

According to data, in 2019, there were 5,221 recorded incidents of domestic violence, whereas in 2023, they increased to 11,589.

In addressing femicide, Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis emphasized the critical need for a comprehensive restructuring of the Police to confront the challenges of the present era. He also acknowledged that “a very heavy shadow falls over Greek society,” a sentiment he resonated with.

Mr. Chrysochoidis acknowledged that “there have been failures, but in 2023 alone, there were 12,500 incidents, and the Police intervened to save 13,000 women.” “The challenge is that we’re dealing with an incident of domestic violence every 45 minutes, and we respond promptly,” he emphasized. “We address 30-40 threat cases daily. However, the urgency has escalated due to the rapid pace of events. Due to the support they receive, more women are speaking out,” he observed. He also remarked, “The issue is that the Police cannot keep up with the pace of developments.”
