Hundreds of bodies, many of them still unidentified, have been buried in shallow graves across the plains of the Himalayan region after being swept down from the mountains by the powerful floodwaters.

Meanwhile, authorities in Nepal are focusing their efforts on reaching 933 people trapped in tunnels and underground areas at six hydroelectric projects. Rescue operations have been hampered by debris blocking the entrances.

The landslide triggered by the melting glaciers was so powerful that it registered as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake.

Rescue teams are trying to reach more than 900 people believed to be trapped in tunnels and underground areas at six hydroelectric projects in Nepal following the devastating flash floods, the country’s disaster management authority said on Monday.

Nepal’s disaster management authority said on Monday that 903 deaths had been recorded in the country, while 4,247 people remained missing, including 592 foreign nationals. As of Sunday, Chinese authorities had reported 16 deaths and 546 people missing in Tibet.

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that Beijing had mobilised more than 2,100 rescue workers and allocated at least 220 million yuan ($33 million).
