Although Germans are traditionally seen as the most devoted nudists, a new survey conducted across six Western European countries (France, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Italy, and the United Kingdom) suggests that Danes are actually the most likely to practice nudism.
According to the findings, 54% of Danes report having engaged in nudism at some point, compared to 45% of Germans, 44% of Spaniards, 31% of French respondents, 25% of Britons, and 22% of Italians.
Across all six countries, men appear more open to nudism than women, and the most widely accepted context for nudism remains designated areas such as nudist beaches.
Germans are historically associated with nudism due to the “FKK” culture of designated nudist zones (e.g., in parks and lakes), which began in the 19th century.
However, Denmark stands out for its broader tolerance: a notable share of Danes say they are comfortable being nude in their own garden (37%), while 22% say they would practice nudism on any beach, regardless of whether it is officially designated for that purpose. Younger Danes are also more open to nudism, whereas in Germany the opposite is observed — the practice is more common among older age groups.
Germany’s long-standing association with nudism is linked to the Freikörperkultur (FKK) movement, which emerged in the late 19th century and promoted body freedom in natural settings.
While the movement’s popularity has declined somewhat in recent decades, Germany remains one of the most permissive countries globally regarding nudism in regulated spaces, with beaches, lakeshores and campsites commonly featuring legally designated nudist zones.
