Cyprus is proceeding with the creation of two Repair and Reuse Centres in Nicosia and Limassol, within the framework of the European project LIFE IP CYzero WASTE. The aim is the reduction of waste and the strengthening of the reuse of objects.
The centre of Nicosia will be constructed in Dali and will serve the districts of Nicosia, Larnaca and Famagusta. The centre of Limassol will be located in Agios Spyridonas and will cover the districts of Limassol and Paphos.
At the centres, used objects from households will be collected, such as furniture, electrical and electronic appliances, clothes, bicycles, toys and books. The objects will be checked, repaired and redistributed either free of charge or at particularly affordable prices, depending on the structure and the stage of operation of the system.
The capacity of the units is estimated at 3,500 tonnes of materials per year, with the aim for it to increase to 4,500 tonnes within the first three years.
The initial capacity of the two units is estimated at 3,500 tonnes of materials per year, with the aim for it to increase to 4,500 tonnes within the first three years of operation.
At the same time, a network of 36 reuse shops at Green Points is being developed until 2028. Pilot shops are already operating in Malounta and Linou.
The total budget of the project amounts to approximately €6.7 million and possible co-financing from the Cohesion Policy Operational Programme “THALEIA 2021–2027” is foreseen. The project is included in the European and national goals for limiting the burial of urban waste below 10% by 2035 and for strengthening reuse and recycling.
