Police have made a second arrest in connection with the attempted arson of a forest near Kornos. Following the arrest of a 26-year-old man, who remains in custody, a 28-year-old woman was arrested yesterday under a court warrant and has also been remanded in custody.

The attempted arson took place on 2 August. According to police, at around 7:00 p.m., members of the public driving through the Kornos area saw two people get into a vehicle and leave. Moments later, they noticed a fire had broken out in a nearby forest and managed to extinguish it before it spread.

In an interview, the Chief Fire Officer said that more than 90% of wildfires in Cyprus are caused by human activity.

As part of the investigation, police obtained evidence that led to a court warrant for the arrest of the 26-year-old on suspicion of conspiracy to commit a felony, attempted forest arson and other offences. He was arrested and remanded in custody.

The 26-year-old is due to appear before the Larnaca District Court today for a detention hearing.

The Kofinou Regional Police Station is continuing its investigation.
