More than 90% of wildfires in Cyprus are caused by human activity, Fire Service Chief and General Fire Coordinator Nikos Logginos told the Cyprus News Agency.
He said that more than 1,450 wildfires have broken out so far this year, adding that the most recent ones were caused by malicious acts. He noted that five separate fire ignition points were found within a stretch of just 500 metres.
Logginos said the emergency response mechanism was activated immediately and that fire engines, supported by aircraft once conditions allowed them to fly, managed to bring the fire under control in the early hours of the morning.
He added that the CY Alert public warning system was also activated.
Regarding efforts to contain the wildfires in Greece, Logginos said Cyprus remains in close contact with the Greek authorities and stands ready to provide any assistance if needed.
Responding to a question, Logginos said Cyprus must remain extremely cautious, adding that temperatures have now risen significantly.
“Wildfires break out every day for different reasons. As I have said, most are caused either by malicious acts or by human negligence. We therefore need to remain constantly alert and ready to respond to any incident,” he said.
Asked whether patrols and drone surveillance were continuing, Logginos said they remained in place.
Meanwhile, a wildfire that broke out early on Monday in the Prasteio Kellakiou area was brought fully under control. Authorities believe it most likely started in a rubbish bin where unknown individuals had disposed of hot charcoal.
