The Court of Appeals Prosecutor is seeking felony charges against five high-ranking police officers for the murder of AEK supporter Michalis Katsouris. According to a report by “Kathimerini,” those charged include the former Attica police chief and two senior officers from the Hellenic Police headquarters.

They are considered responsible for failing to prevent the entry of over 100 Croatian fans into the country before the scheduled AEK-Dinamo Zagreb match in Nea Filadelfeia in August 2023, despite a ban on fan travel for the event.

The offense of endangerment occurs when someone, by any means, places another person in a position that is less safe for their life, having previously been in a safer position.

Their actions created conditions that allowed the fans to cross three countries (Montenegro, Albania, Greece), enter Athens, move freely using public transportation, and ultimately cause, among other things, injuries to several people and the fatal injury of an AEK supporter.

Initially, the Prosecutor’s Office recommended closing the investigation into the police officers, arguing that the breach of duty couldn’t be proven due to a lack of specific intent. However, the Court of Appeals Prosecutor now calls for an investigation into the possible felony offense of endangerment with potential intent and believes that criminal charges may be justified. Additionally, it was decided that the part of the case involving the Traffic Directorate officials’ criminal liability should be archived.
