Deputy Speaker of Parliament Olga Gerovasili also announced her departure from SYRIZA’s Parliamentary Group.
“This is how I have conducted my political journey and this is how I will continue to do so—with the same Goal and the same Principles. However, that Goal and those Principles are not expressed by the remaining political formation. For this reason, I am becoming an independent member, leaving the Parliamentary Group of SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance,” Olga Gerovasili said in a statement.
At the same time, 63 members of the party’s Central Committee announced their resignation, while, among others, Giannis Ragkousis also resigned.
Opinion polls show that Alexis Tsipras’ ELAS party is in second place with 16.6% (New Democracy leads with 29.3%), while SYRIZA stands at 1.6%, below the threshold for entering Parliament.
Following today’s departures, and with the anticipated departures of Sokratis Famellos and Nina Kasimati considered highly likely, according to Avgi, SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance’s Parliamentary Group will consist of its new Secretary, Giannis Amanatidis, Rena Dourou, Pavlos Polakis, Nikos Pappas, Theofilos Xanthopoulos, Giorgos Papailiou, Elena Akrita and Christos Giannoulis. Most likely, Theodora Akriotou will also join the Parliamentary Group soon, taking over the parliamentary seat (in Evia) of Symeon Kedikoglou, who has made it clear that he intends to resign his parliamentary seat.
On Saturday, elections are scheduled to elect the President of the Parliamentary Group, between Pavlos Polakis and Rena Dourou, in a vote that is expected to involve a single-digit number of MPs.
