Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, announced that specially trained and experienced police officers will be stationed daily inside Roma settlements over the next month and a half to “combat crime.”
In statements on Monday, Chrysochoidis stressed that officers “will patrol these neighborhoods so that everyone understands there is no escaping the law” and that “the tolerance that has existed for so many years must come to an end”.
The “Greek FBI” was established in 2024, with jurisdiction over organized crime, drug trafficking, and financial crimes.
“In Attica, where the biggest problem is found, crime is declining. On the one hand, organized crime has been hit hard by the Greek FBI, with 1.400 arrests and 500 pretrial detentions in ten months. On the other hand, there is petty crime affecting neighborhoods, and here we face a serious problem with the Roma”, he added.
A 50-member rapid response unit will be established under the Organized Crime Directorate (the so-called “Greek FBI”). The unit will rotate patrols in Zephyri, Menidi, and Aspropyrgos, using its own operational vehicles such as SUVs and vans.
According to Kathimerini, a similar plan was attempted by the Hellenic Police leadership last May in western Attica using special guards, but it failed to take hold.
