Christos Papadimitriou, Deputy Chairman of the National Organization for the Development of Agricultural and Food Systems (EODASAM), submitted his resignation [1], [2], [3], [4] following the recent controversy surrounding the report on the Tempi train disaster.
According to sources, Mr. Papadimitriou’s resignation was voluntary and was made public through a letter to the Deputy Minister of Transport, Konstantinos Kyranakis, in which he described the report as “valuable” for Greek railways, with the only exception being the section on fire safety, which “requires further investigation.”
The National Organization for the Development of Agricultural and Food Systems (EODASAM) is the authority responsible for investigating aviation and railway accidents in Greece.
This followed statements from Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis and government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis, who “indirectly” called for his resignation, as the management of the National Organization for the Development of Agricultural and Food Systems (EODASAM) is independent with a five-year term, and the government cannot replace its members.
The EODASAM report on the Tempi train disaster, presented on February 27, mentioned a “fireball” caused by an “unknown fuel.” On Monday, Mr. Papadimitriou announced that any reference to a “fireball” would be removed from the report, which the Organization carried out shortly afterward. The following day, he revised his statement, asserting that the section on the fireball was not incorrect but was removed to be scientifically substantiated and re-integrated.
