The creation of AI-generated images in the Ghibli style (Ghiblification), mimicking the aesthetic of Hayao Miyazaki, director of films like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, has led to a record increase in users for OpenAI’s chatbot, with this new trend dominating social media.
The average number of weekly active users surpassed 150 million for the first time this year, according to data from market research firm Similarweb. On Monday, Chat GPT users increased by 1 million within an hour, and weekly downloads rose by 5% compared to the previous week. At the same time, the app’s revenue grew by 6%.
Hayao Miyazaki himself had stated, however, that he would never want to incorporate this technology into his work.
The increase in users, however, put a strain on the servers and caused delays, as the company temporarily limited usage.
“We’re getting things under control, but you should expect that new releases from OpenAI will be delayed, things will break, and services will sometimes be slow as we address capacity challenges,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Tuesday.
The widespread use of the AI tool for creating Ghibli-style results has also raised concerns about potential copyright violations.
