A bomb exploded at an apartment building in Kolonos yesterday, injuring four people: two civilians and two police officers.
The bomb was concealed in a bag containing drugs. Two people discovered the bag and alerted police. The device detonated as an officer was examining the bag.
According to Kathimerini, investigators recovered remnants of an electric detonator, batteries, a remote control for remotely triggering the bomb and a low-powered explosive substance. Packages containing a suspected narcotic substance, possibly heroin, were also found.
The police officer who examined the bag containing the bomb suffered injuries to his eye and hand and was taken to the 401 General Military Hospital.
According to Kathimerini, police are examining two scenarios. The first, considered more likely, is that someone involved in criminal activity left the bag containing the bomb and drugs near the building’s entrance, intending to retrieve it later, either personally or through an accomplice, and transport it to an unknown destination. The second is that the bomb and drugs were intended as a trap for another drug dealer as part of a settling of scores.
However, the discovery of the bag near the lift entrance by a resident and the building manager disrupted these possible plans. After inspecting its contents and noticing the drugs, they alerted police.
