The head of the Athens Prosecutor’s Office, Aristeidis Koreas, ordered an urgent preliminary investigation into yesterday’s “blackout” at the airports.

The prosecutor assigned the investigation to the Cybercrime Department, aiming to determine whether the offense of dangerous interference with aircraft traffic has been committed and, if it is confirmed that almost all frequencies in the Athens FIR were affected, to trace where the interference came from.

It is recalled that earlier on Sunday, due to technical problems with frequencies, Greek airspace “closed,” resulting in limited landings and take-offs and a partial paralysis of airport operations. After midday, traffic gradually resumed, but it has not yet been clarified what exactly caused the problem.

The Hellenic Air Traffic Controllers’ Association accuses HCAA management of long-standing inaction and inadequate maintenance of equipment.

“The technical issue, which occurred simultaneously on multiple frequencies in the form of ‘noise,’ originating, according to initial indications, from telecommunications infrastructure and affecting communications within the Athens FIR, has now been fully resolved,” the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority said yesterday in a statement.

The problem did not affect the Hellenic Air Force, which operates with a completely separate and autonomous air traffic control system. The Hellenic Air Traffic Controllers’ Association reiterates its accusation of long-standing inaction and inadequate maintenance of equipment by HCAA management.

Today, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport published seven points for upgrading air navigation, relating to the “Action Plan for Infringements and Compliance with EU Law in the Area of Air Traffic Management (ATM)” – Implementation Progress.
