US President Joe Biden has publicly pledged for the first time not to send any more weapons that could be used in an attack on Rafah if Israel escalates its operation in the eastern Gaza city.
“I made it clear that if they go into Rafah, … I’m not supplying the weapons,” stated the US president, whose country is the largest supplier of weapons to Israel, in an interview with CNN. He also acknowledged in the interview that US bombs have killed civilians while reaffirming his commitment to continue supporting Israel’s defense.
On Wednesday, US officials confirmed that the delivery of a shipment of 1,800 907kg bombs and 1,700 226kg bombs to Israel was halted due to the risk to civilians in Gaza.
Students from over 100 universities worldwide, including Cambridge, Dublin, and Amsterdam, participate in pro-Palestine demonstrations.
Since the IDF took control of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt on Monday, 80,000 out of the 1.4 million+ Palestinians who had taken refuge in Rafah have departed, according to the relevant UN agency (UNRWA).
Tanks and planes bombed several areas and at least four houses in Rafah overnight, resulting in the deaths of 20 Palestinians and injuries to several others, according to Palestinian health authorities.
Meanwhile, Joe Biden, who is running for re-election in November, faces pressure from his party and university students in the US who are protesting in favor of Palestine.
