Athens ranks 15th among the world’s top 50 cities for flexible and remote work, according to the International Workplace Group’s Work from Anywhere Index. The ranking measures the appeal of destinations for “workations” – combining work and holidays – a trend that accelerated after the pandemic.

Bangkok ranks first, followed by Tokyo, Barcelona and Porto. Athens scores highly for its warm climate, abundant sunshine, relatively affordable rents, availability of furnished accommodation and flexible workspaces. It also performs well for transport, access to beaches, parks and mountains, and its cultural attractions.

The top 10 cities for 2026 are Bangkok, Tokyo, Barcelona, Porto, Vancouver, Budapest, Naples, Medellín, Lisbon and Seoul.

Athens received a perfect 10/10 score for the availability and cost of visas for digital nomads. However, it performed less well in other categories. Broadband connectivity scored just 3/10, while safety and the cost of dining out also received relatively low ratings. Despite these shortcomings, Athens remains an attractive destination for people looking to combine work with travel.

Paris, New York and Hong Kong all ranked below Athens, reinforcing the Greek capital’s appeal as a destination for remote workers.
