Yesterday, an active-duty Air Force officer was arrested for espionage, as he was gathering and sending classified information on NATO matters to China, according to media reports.

The officer, who confessed, was using a special device, equipped with software from the Chinese authorities, to photograph and transmit the classified documents.

He had been under surveillance for two months, after the CIA informed the National Intelligence Service (EYP) of his activities, which then notified the leadership of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (GEETHA).

An active-duty armed forces officer in the Air Force was arrested yesterday for espionage, as he was collecting and leaking classified information on NATO-related matters, such as the movements of assets in air, land, sea and seabed, to China.

Military personnel who intentionally leak secret information of military significance to a third party are punishable by imprisonment.

He is described as an experienced officer who was commander of a Training Wing responsible for telecommunications and electronic systems, serving in an Air Force unit in Kavouri. That is, an experienced officer holding a staff position with access to classified information of the Hellenic Air Force, as well as of the other branches of the Greek Armed Forces and allied states, according to a report by Kathimerini.

The officer, who confessed, was using a special device with software from the Chinese authorities, which was found in his possession, to photograph and send the classified documents.

He had been placed under surveillance two months ago when the CIA informed the National Intelligence Service (EYP) of his activity, which in turn alerted the leadership of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (GEETHA). He admitted that he was sending the information in exchange for payment to his recruiter, who is likely located in China and whose details are known to Western intelligence services.

It is not yet known whether he was acting alone within the Greek Armed Forces; however, he is reportedly believed to have attempted to recruit other individuals.
