Amazon MGM Studios acquired the James Bond franchise from producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, gaining full creative control over the films.
The James Bond series began in 1962 under Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, before being managed by his daughter, Barbara Broccoli, and his adopted son, Michael G. Wilson.
The most recent James Bond film, “No Time to Die,” was released in 2021, marking Daniel Craig’s final appearance in the role. Moving forward, Amazon will decide who will play the iconic spy, 007.
There is no timeline for the announcement of the new actor or the release of the next film.
After Thursday’s announcement, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos asked fans for their opinion on social media, inquiring, “Who would you choose as the next Bond?”
In 2021, when Amazon agreed to acquire MGM, Broccoli and Wilson stated that they would retain creative control, opting for a more “traditional” approach to managing the role. However, by handing over control to Amazon, the possibility of expanding the franchise has now arisen.
Michael G. Wilson stated, “After nearly 60 incredible years with 007, I am stepping away from producing the James Bond films to focus on the arts and charitable work. As such, Barbara and I agree that it’s time for our trusted partner, Amazon MGM Studios, to lead James Bond into the future.”
