By March, at least three detainee deaths had been recorded in Greece; however, the number may be higher, as the Hellenic Police does not publish data on deaths in police custody, according to a MIIR investigation.
As part of a Europe-wide investigation into deaths in police custody, MIIR requested data from the Hellenic Police but received no response.
Despite the fact that since 1991 the UN has recommended that all countries provide information on deaths related to the police, Greece does not do so.
In the past six years alone, the National Mechanism for the Investigation of Arbitrary Incidents (EMIDIPA) of the Ombudsman, the body responsible for investigating such cases, has looked into more than 1,200 incidents, noting that these represent only the tip of the iceberg.
