Surveys for the Greece–Cyprus electricity interconnection project are expected to resume this weekend, following the issuance of a NAVTEX today, valid from November 6, 2026, to March 6, 2027.
The surveys will be conducted by the French research vessel Abeille Marengo, with operations beginning off the coast of Kasos.
“The required licensing procedures have been completed by the relevant Greek authorities for survey and cable-laying operations as part of the Greece–Cyprus electricity interconnection project (GSI), following a request submitted by the French company NEXANS on behalf of the project owner, GSI,” the Greek Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The electricity interconnection project is expected to provide up to €138 million in benefits to consumers, with 90% of those benefits going to Cyprus.
Meanwhile, according to Kathimerini, Turkey has requested information about the project and is in contact with France. Athens expects any Turkish response to be expressed through diplomatic channels rather than at sea.
Reports indicate that Ankara wants communications to take place in writing through diplomatic channels. The necessary steps are already underway, with the relevant wording being prepared to enable the competent Turkish authorities to proceed.
