The second worker hospitalized following Friday’s explosion at Motor Oil’s facilities in Agioi Theodoroi died yesterday after sustaining severe head injuries. The other worker, who had been hospitalized in critical condition, died on Friday afternoon.
Four people have been arrested in connection with the explosion. Three are company employees: a 36-year-old foreman, a 50-year-old health and safety manager and a 34-year-old project operator. They face charges of causing an explosion and endangering public safety. A 67-year-old man is also wanted on the same charges.
The first person arrested was a 59-year-old contractor whose crew employed the two workers who were injured and subsequently died following the refinery explosion.
An explosion at Motor Oil’s facilities in January 2020 left one person dead, while another in September 2024 injured nine people.
The explosion occurred during preventive maintenance work in an outdoor area of a reactor unit. No fire broke out, but five people were injured, including the two workers who later died.
Meanwhile, trade unions have called a 24-hour strike at Motor Oil’s Agioi Theodoroi refinery on Wednesday, October 14, following the fatal workplace accident.
In a statement, the Panhellenic Energy Federation said the two deaths “at high-risk facilities such as refineries once again highlight the need for effective implementation of health and safety measures, particularly during maintenance work and when such work is carried out by employees of contracting companies.”
