Donald Trump announced a halt to attacks on energy facilities by Russia and Ukraine yesterday, without having informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in advance.
“Effective immediately, an ENERGY CEASEFIRE is now in place in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Both sides have agreed. Do not violate it!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Zelenskyy expressed surprise at the announcement but said he would accept the agreement if Vladimir Putin did the same. “If President Trump negotiated this with Putin, please let us know when the ceasefire begins. We are ready and will accept it,” the Ukrainian president told Axios.
On Saturday, D. Trump said Ukraine should elect a new president because Zelenskyy had not reached an agreement with Russia to end the war.
However, Russia continued its attacks following Trump’s announcement, including strikes on Ukrainian energy facilities.
Earlier, the Ukrainian president had rejected Trump’s demand that Kyiv stop bombing Russian oil refineries, arguing that Moscow must first halt its attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
The dispute between Washington and Kyiv began on Friday, when Trump announced that he was lifting sanctions on Russian diesel exports. He argued that the move would lower fuel prices globally and in the US ahead of next month’s midterm elections.
