Annita Demetriou is withdrawing from the candidate selection process of the Democratic Rally (DISY), a centre-right political party in Cyprus, for the 2028 presidential election. She said the decision was made without pressure or conditions and was intended to preserve party unity.
The DISY president announced her decision following a meeting with former party leader Averof Neofytou and MP Giorgos Pamboridis. She said she considers it her responsibility to prevent divisions and maintain unity within the party.

Demetriou said the candidate selection process would proceed as planned, with party members making the decision democratically. She added that other candidates could also express interest. Nominations for the internal party elections are scheduled for October 26.
Former DISY leader Averof Neofytou described the decision as responsible, saying it would help preserve party unity. In a written statement, he said the party’s supporters were central to efforts to address the country’s problems, support young people and build a fairer society.
