An apartment building collapsed in the Petralona district of Athens. According to initial reports, all residents are safe, although there were earlier fears that four people were missing. They were later confirmed to have been outside the building. Search operations in the rubble are continuing to rule out the possibility that anyone remains trapped beneath the debris.
The building is a four-story apartment block with seven apartments, located on Alkminis Street.
According to the Fire Service, a large emergency response has been deployed to the scene, including the 1st Special Disaster Response Unit (EMAK) and two specialist search-and-rescue dogs. The Hellenic Police, the National Emergency Aid Center (EKAB), the Hellenic Gas Distribution Company (DEFA), and the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (DEDDIE) are also assisting.
The collapsed building is a four-story apartment block with seven apartments, located on Alkminis Street.
The collapse occurred during demolition work on a neighboring two-story building, which was being cleared to make way for the construction of a new five-story residential building with a basement.
According to Kathimerini, the demolition permit for the neighboring building was first issued in November 2024 after receiving approval from the Central Sector Architectural Council.
The demolition permit was renewed six months later, in July 2025, after the property changed ownership. In September 2025, preliminary approval was granted, followed by the issuance of a building permit in March 2026 for the construction of a five-story apartment building with a basement and an attic on the site of the older structure.
