What is the European Order of Merit and what does it symbolize for the European Parliament?
The European Order of Merit is a distinction that recognises and honours individuals who have contributed to European integration and to promoting European values. Its aim is to inspire future generations by showing how people can help shape our world through their actions and principles.
While Member States have recognised excellence for years through their own national honours, until now there had been no equivalent distinction at the level of the European Union. With the European Order of Merit, we wanted to establish an honour that transcends national borders.
In such uncertain times, it is especially important to highlight the resilience and added value of the European Union and its people.
What do you admire about Giannis Antetokounmpo and why was he selected as one of the recipients of the European Order of Merit?
Giannis Antetokounmpo represents far more than excellence in sport. He is considered one of the most important athletes of his generation, yet what makes his story inspiring goes far beyond basketball.
His journey, from Sepolia in Athens as the child of Nigerian immigrants to becoming a global symbol, is a remarkable example of resilience and determination. He embodies values that resonate deeply with Europe: talent, hard work, equality, inclusion, and the belief that every person can grow and succeed when given the opportunity.
Countless young Europeans see themselves in Giannis. He reminds us that we can be many things at once, and that Europe is stronger when everyone has equal opportunities to thrive, regardless of cultural or economic background. That is precisely the spirit the European Order of Merit seeks to honour.
If the European Union were a U2 song, which one would it be and why?
U2 are among the honourees of the European Order of Merit. Beyond their music, they have consistently used their voice and influence to support causes deeply connected to European values: solidarity, peace, social justice, and human dignity. Their work has inspired and united generations of Europeans, often reminding us that what brings us together will always be stronger than what seeks to divide us.
If the European Union were a U2 song, I would probably choose “One”. Because Europe’s strength does not come from uniformity. We are different, we speak many languages, and at times we are complex, but we are always stronger when we choose unity over division. Europe moves forward when we stand together despite our differences, and that is the beauty of our Union.
