The UAE accuses Iran — or a regional allied organization such as Hezbollah — of launching a drone attack that caused a fire near the Barakah nuclear power plant.
The UAE is reported to have previously responded to Iranian attacks on its oil infrastructure with airstrikes on Iranian facilities. During the war, the Emirates strengthened cooperation with Israel and have been viewed as the Gulf state most supportive of military action against Iran.
The attack occurred during the sixth week of the US-Israel ceasefire with Iran, though peace negotiations have reportedly stalled.
The UAE and Saudi Arabia are also reported to have secretly carried out attacks against Iran during the war without publicly acknowledging them.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump issued new threats toward Iran in a social media post.
“For Iran, the clock is ticking and they better move FAST, otherwise there will be nothing left of them. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!” the US president wrote on Truth Social.
Trump also reportedly held a phone call with Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of a meeting of Israel’s security cabinet regarding Iran, Lebanon and Gaza, amid intense speculation in Israel that war with Iran could resume due to signs of a possible compromise.
According to state media reports, the UAE foreign minister held talks with several regional countries, including Saudi Arabia, with whom relations have recently deteriorated. Riyadh condemned the attack.
