This year’s Pulitzer Prizes were announced

This year’s Pulitzer Prize were announced yesterday, with 3 awards for The New York Times, 2 for The Washington Post and 2 for Reuters.

Technology was at the centre with 3 awards for related topics, such as the report by Jeff Horwitz and Engen Tham of Reuters on Meta, which exposed users, among them children, to scams and manipulation through AI.

The Pulitzer for the category International Reporting was awarded to Dake Kang, Garance Burke, Byron Tau, Aniruddha Ghosal and collaborator Yael Grauer of Associated Press for their international investigation on advanced mass surveillance tools, which were created in Silicon Valley, evolved in China and spread globally before returning to the US for secret use by the Border Patrol.

The Pulitzer Prize are known as awards granted in the US for journalists, but also for writers and musicians.

The Pulitzer for Explanatory Reporting was awarded to Susie Neilson, Megan Fan Munce and Sara DiNatale of the San Francisco Chronicle for the series “Burned”, which showed how insurance companies, using algorithmic tools, failed Californians who lost their homes to fires, systematically undervaluing their properties, rejecting compensation claims and making reconstruction impossible.

At the same time, 3 freelancers were awarded, such as Saeed Alghorra who won the Breaking News Photography award for documenting the war and the genocide carried out by Israel in Gaza.
