In western Nicosia the process of the killing of 19,000 pigs has begun in two units in Palaimetocho, because of foot-and-mouth disease, which will have been completed by the end of the month, while this number corresponds to 6.1%.
So far the infected units amount to 101, of which 13 concern cattle, 86 sheep and goats and 2 pigs.
There have already been killed 35,534 sheep and goats and 2,244 cattle, which correspond to 8% and 2.8% of the total population respectively.
Meanwhile, the livestock breeders disagree with the handling of the government and their mobilization at the entrance of Nicosia, but also the warning for road closures on Thursday shows that they intend to escalate their protests.
An amount of €28 million has been approved for compensations, while the payments proceed gradually.
The Veterinary Services state that they apply the European regulations for the tackling of the disease.
The livestock breeders request selective killing only of the animals with symptoms, the possibility of private checks and clear information about the compensations. From its side, the government declares that the universal killing is provided for by the legislation.
At the same time, the vaccinations proceed with a rate of 73.5% in cattle, 60% in sheep and goats and 94.7% in pigs within protection zones.
