A man, for unknown motives, shot two members of the National Guard near the White House, seriously injuring them. The shooting attack happened near the entrance of the Farragut West metro station, a few blocks away from the White House.
The suspect who was arrested is Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a refugee from Afghanistan, while Donald Trump described the attack as “terrorism” and said he will intensify his efforts to deport migrants. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, in fact, announced after Trump’s statements that it suspended immigration applications of Afghan nationals.
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced after Trump’s statements that it suspended immigration applications of Afghan nationals.
Lakanwal had entered the United States in September 2021 under a program during the presidency of Joe Biden called “Operation Allies Welcome,” which provided entry to Afghan nationals who were leaving their country after the Taliban’s takeover of power.
Before the attack, certain officials and members of the National Guard were concerned about the safety of the soldiers who had been deployed on the streets of American cities.
A court had ordered the suspension of the deployment of the National Guard to Washington; however, after the attack Trump is sending an additional 500 and is asking for the court decision to be frozen. Already in Washington there were more than 2,000 members of the National Guard.
