The expansion and upgrade of the Archaeological Museum of Athens by the architectural firms of David Chipperfield and Alexandros Tombazi has received the “green light” from the two advisory bodies of the Ministry of Culture: the Central Council of Modern Monuments and the Central Archaeological Council.

The project is considered essential because the existing building, designed by Panagis Kalkos, Armodios Vlachos, and Ernst Ziller, was inaugurated in 1889. This means it no longer adequately accommodates the increased number of visitors. Through the expansion and upgrade, various issues (e.g., humidity, water infiltration) will be addressed, seismic protection will be enhanced, and accessibility will be improved.

6,000 additional artifacts to be displayed, the enlargement of key spaces like the temporary exhibition halls, and the development of a new public park.

Specifically, the design envisions the presentation of 17,000 artifacts, 6,000 more than the 11,000 currently on display, along a chronological “path” guiding visitors from Neolithic exhibits to those of Late Antiquity. At the same time, the expansion will increase the size of numerous spaces, such as the temporary exhibition halls, the library, and the historical photographic archive, while also creating new educational areas.

The study also includes modern reception facilities, a museum shop, an auditorium, and a restaurant with extended hours, full accessibility, and an open public garden with a refreshment area.
