Young people in Cyprus spend an average of three hours a day on TikTok and two hours on Instagram on topics such as news and current affairs, as 74% say they get their information from the social media pages of news outlets, while only 10% visit their websites directly and just 3% get their news from TV.

In total, they spend an average of 111.1 minutes per day on TikTok, 107.7 minutes on Instagram, 47.3 minutes on Facebook, and 25.7 minutes on X (formerly Twitter).

92% of young people in Cyprus have an Instagram account, 88% use Facebook, and 53% use TikTok — mainly those aged 14 to 24.

Instagram ranks first both in number of users and in preference, with 92% having an account. Meanwhile, 84% say they prefer short-form videos “to broaden their knowledge,” and 55% follow at least one influencer. Although social media are their primary source of news, 40% say they find it difficult to judge the credibility of information, 29% feel underinformed on certain topics, and another 29% say they experience information overload.

The findings come from a study on youth information habits conducted by IMR/University of Nicosia on behalf of the Cyprus Youth Organization (ONEK).

“Although most respondents said they get their news from online news sites, in practice young people mainly follow the social media pages of those outlets,” the survey notes. Among the most popular news sources among Cypriot youth are Philenews, SigmaLive, Reporter, Antilive, and AlphaNews.
