Donald Trump ruled out sending U.S. troops to Ukraine as part of security guarantees in the event of a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia, although the deal would include Ukraine purchasing $90 billion worth of American weapons. However, he said Washington might be willing to provide air support to Ukraine to back such an agreement.

The United Kingdom and several European allies have proposed the idea of a “guarantee force” that could be deployed to Ukraine under a future peace deal to deter further Russian aggression.

“There will be great assistance regarding security,” Trump said, adding that European countries would also participate. “They are the front line because they are there, but we will help them.”

Trump has also dismissed the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO, a non-negotiable condition for Moscow to end the war.

Vladimir Putin proposed meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Moscow, but Zelenskyy declined, according to AFP. Hungary expressed interest in hosting the meeting, while Emmanuel Macron suggested Geneva.

The Swiss foreign minister promised “immunity” to Putin despite his condemnation by the International Criminal Court.

Moscow has not yet confirmed such a meeting, which would be the first between the two leaders since the invasion. The Kremlin stated that Trump and Putin discussed the idea of “raising the level of representation” in Ukraine talks.
