The Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias, announced the abolition of service in the Navy and Air Force from 2026 and the classification of all conscripts in the Army, with the exception of those engaged in related professions (e.g. ship engineers, aeronautical engineers).
The reasons are mainly operational, as, on the one hand, training in the land army is considered more complete, and on the other hand, there is a great need for an increase in staffing in critical units on the islands and Evros.
Changes are also being promoted in the Armed Forces with reforms aimed at creating a more flexible and modern model of administration, reducing bureaucracy and improving infrastructure and conditions for Armed Forces personnel, according to Kathimerini.
From the resources to be saved through the reforms in the armed forces, the compensation of conscripts will be increased from €8 per month to €100 for those serving in the border area and €50 for those serving in the hinterland.
45 camps will also be merged and military courts will be abolished. In total, six of the 15 currently operating will be retained in Athens, Thessaloniki, Larissa and Xanthi.
Still, 1,059 residences for military personnel will be built by August 2026, with some being made available on a social basis to teachers and doctors, mainly on the islands.
