Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said today that Russia launched around 400 drones against Ukraine overnight and called on the country’s Western partners to impose sanctions on Moscow “faster.” Two people were killed in the attacks on Kyiv.
This followed the largest Russian drone attack since the start of the war in February 2022, which took place overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday.
The Russian military launched 728 drones—surpassing the previous record of 539—targeting airports and military facilities in western Ukraine. There were injuries, but no fatalities.
Analysts suggest that Russia may be capable of launching as many as 1,000 drones per attack until the fall.
This major Russian offensive came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he would continue sending weapons to Kyiv to help it defend against Russian bombings.
“It is especially telling that Russia launched this attack just as the U.S. publicly announced it would be supplying us with weapons,” a senior Zelenskyy aide said.
On Tuesday, the Kremlin voiced its displeasure over Washington’s announcement, arguing that it would “prolong the conflict”. Ukraine has been asking its Western allies, including the U.S., for months to provide more air defense systems to counter Russian attacks.
