Law 5170/2025 , passed in January, includes an article that bans the installation and parking of motorhomes in archaeological sites, coastlines, beaches, public forests, and generally in public spaces.
It also prohibits the free hosting of a second motorhome on private property, while parking is allowed in organized campsites, provided there are suitable facilities and approval from the businesses or municipalities involved. The fine is €300 per vehicle.
Tourists, caravan owners, and vendors are protesting, as this effectively almost entirely bans the use of caravans in Greece.
The distinction in the law concerns the temporary parking of motorhomes in these areas, as their installation was already banned.
As caravan owner Antonis Zampetas explains to fyi, there is no legislation in place for the creation of camper stops—designated areas for the temporary parking of motorhomes where overnight stays, water refueling, and wastewater disposal are allowed.
In Europe, there are 29,000 registered camper stops, which, as Mr. Zampetas points out, means Greece is losing tourism revenue while countries like Spain, Portugal, and Italy are benefiting.
If these spaces were available, he explains, local communities would also benefit, as alternative tourism (such as motorhome holidays) generates income.
