Three days after the assassination of Hezbollah’s political leader, Hassan Nasrallah, by an Israeli airstrike in Beirut, the organization’s deputy political leader said that Hezbollah continues to operate to achieve its central goals of ‘supporting Gaza and protecting Lebanon’ and is ‘prepared for an Israeli ground invasion.’

The attack, which was carried out using U.S. munitions, according to Al Jazeera, leveled six buildings, killed at least 11 more people, and injured 108. Iran, which supports Hezbollah, said that the strike that killed the Hezbollah leader ‘will not go unanswered,’ while U.S. President Joe Biden is calling for a diplomatic resolution and the avoidance of full-scale war in the Middle East.

Nasrallah led the organization for 32 years. During his leadership, Hezbollah ended the 18-year Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon and fought Israel in 2006.

Nasrallah was one of seven high-ranking Hezbollah officials and one of over 1,000 people killed during a week of Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon. In the same period, according to local authorities, at least 6,000 have been injured and 1 million displaced, while in the past month, the UN reports that 100,000 people have crossed the border into Syria.

In continued Israeli attacks on Lebanon, the leader of Hamas in Lebanon and three senior officials of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) were killed today. Additionally, yesterday, at least 28 people were killed in Gaza and at least 4 in Al Hudaydah, Yemen, from Israeli strikes.
