The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution yesterday [1], [2] demanding an immediate, permanent, and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, as well as the immediate release of all hostages. While non-binding, UN General Assembly resolutions carry symbolic and political significance, reflecting the positions of member states on the Gaza conflict, according to Reuters.

The resolution was supported by 158 of the 193 member states, including Greece. Thirteen countries abstained, and nine voted against it, including Israel and the United States. The U.S. Deputy Ambassador to the UN commented that the resolution “rewards Hamas and downplays the need for the release of the hostages.”

The language of this resolution marks a shift from previous ones. In October 2023, the General Assembly “called for” an immediate “humanitarian truce,” whereas in December 2023, it explicitly “demanded” one through this resolution.

UN General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding but hold primarily symbolic significance.

The General Assembly adopted a resolution (with 159 votes in favor) urging Israel to respect the operations of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), which has been prohibited, and calling on Israel “to allow and facilitate the swift and safe delivery of humanitarian aid in all its forms throughout the Gaza Strip.”

Yesterday, at least 33 Palestinians were killed by Israeli airstrikes in various parts of Gaza, bringing the total death toll of Palestinians to over 44,800 since October 2023. Meanwhile, an estimated 65,000 to 75,000 people remaining in northern Gaza have been without humanitarian aid for 66 days.
