The investigation into the death of 37-year-old Mohammad-Kamran Asik at the Agios Panteleimon Police Station has been handed over to the Ombudsman for “full clarification.”
“By order of the Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, the investigation into the death of a foreign detainee at the Agios Panteleimon Police Station has been transferred to the Ombudsman to ensure a thorough and swift clarification of the case, as part of the mechanism for investigating incidents of police misconduct, leaving no room for doubt,” the statement reads.
The 37-year-old was found dead in the temporary holding cell of the Police Station, which, according to Ef.Syn is the only area not monitored by security cameras.
The Ombudsman is an independent authority that investigates actions, omissions, or conduct by public service agencies that infringe on citizens’ rights.
The case was initially handled internally by the Agios Panteleimon Police Station, where he ended up after being charged with disobedience, following his transfer to five different police stations within a week. His initial arrest was on charges of domestic violence.
The forensic report indicates that he had been beaten, and photographs show that he had multiple injuries on his body.
The Hellenic Police (EL.AS) issued a statement last night, stating that the 37-year-old was “apparently under the influence of substances or alcohol” and that “during his stay in the holding cell, a minor incident occurred with his cellmates, and he was immediately moved to a different area of the station.” However, the statement did not explain the cause of his death.
