The judicial investigation for the actions that followed Tempi was upgraded to felony level, with the investigation focusing on the assignment and execution of the transport of the wreckage of the train in the period 2–6 March 2023.
The Deputy Prosecutor ordered an urgent supplementary preliminary preliminary examination, mainly due to the financial amount of the contract (€178,580), which exceeded the limit of €120,000, while the company that undertook the project appears to have been established after the completion of the works.
The case concerns the process of removal of the wreckage of the fatal train from the point of the collision and their transport to Koulouri of Larisa, a few days after the accident. The examination of the elements by the judicial authorities brought to the forefront questions regarding the way of assignment of the project and the legality of the procedures that were followed.
17 people are called to give explanations, among them representatives of the company, service officials and members of the Region of Thessaly.
Among the people being examined is also the former regional governor of Thessaly, Kostas Agorastos, regarding possible involvement in offenses such as moral instigation to false certification, the use of false documents and the causing of financial damage against a local self-government organization with possible benefit of third parties.
Initially the preliminary examination concerned misdemeanor acts, however the evaluation of the financial data and of the actions that took place in the first days after the tragedy led to the expansion and upgrading of the investigation, with the aim to ascertain if the legal procedures were observed and to attribute any responsibilities.
