The highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI from Rockstar Games, which was originally scheduled to be released on May 26 of next year, has been delayed again — this time to late 2026. Nearly two years have passed since the game was officially announced, and more than 12 years since the release of Grand Theft Auto V.

“Grand Theft Auto VI will be released on Thursday, November 19, 2026,” Rockstar Games said in a statement on X. “We regret adding additional time to what has already been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to complete the game at the level of perfection you’ve come to expect and deserve.”

The GTA series currently includes seven main titles (the first released in 1997), and it takes its name from the legal term used in the U.S. for motor vehicle theft.

The video game, which features two criminal protagonists, Jason and Lucia, takes place in Rockstar’s digital version of Miami, Vice City, and in the state of Leonida, which resembles Florida. Development has been underway since 2018 at Rockstar North in Edinburgh, with support from other studios in New York and worldwide. The original target release date had been late 2025.

The new installment is expected to generate major revenue for Rockstar, as Grand Theft Auto V alone has earned $8.6 billion since its release in 2013. Rockstar’s most recent major release, Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018), reached $725 million in sales during its opening weekend.
