Two of the most highly anticipated films of the year, Megalopolis and Joker: Folie à Deux, failed to meet expectations [1], [2] at the U.S. box office during their opening weekend.
“Megalopolis” is an epic science fiction drama directed by Francis Ford Coppola, renowned for directing “The Godfather” series. The film earned just $4 million in its debut weekend, far below its $140 million production budget.
“Joker: Folie à Deux,” a musical sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 hit, grossed $40 million, less than half of the $96 million the original film grossed during its 2019 opening.
“Joker,” starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, was expected to open in the U.S. to at least $50 to $60 million.
Both films received poor reviews. “Megalopolis earned a 46% score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, which aggregates critics’ ratings, while “Joker 2” received just 33%. On IMDb, reflecting audience ratings, “Joker 2” scored 5.3, and “Megalopolis” 5.0.
Despite the negative reviews, the producers of “Joker 2” remain optimistic about the film’s chances for an Oscar, particularly for the performances of Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga.
