After 23 days of hunger strike outside the Hellenic Parliament, Panos Routsis announced that he is ending his protest following the acceptance of all his demands for toxicological and biochemical tests on his son Denis’ body.
The decision came after prosecutors agreed to retrieve from the archives a previously dismissed complaint against the coroners involved in the Tempi train disaster, effectively reopening the path for Routsis’ request and similar ones from other victims’ families. If criminal responsibilities are found among coroners or other individuals, the case will proceed separately under judicial investigation.
The announcement was made during a press briefing in front of Parliament, attended by Routsis and his lawyer, Zoe Konstantopoulou.
Routsis said that “the case does not end here,” while his lawyer, Zoe Konstantopoulou, called it “a major victory.”
“Today proves that light can overcome darkness,” Konstantopoulou said. “It also proves that one person, with the strength of their soul, the support of their loved ones and of society, and with justice on their side, can defeat even the harshest and most relentless mechanisms.”
Routsis then confirmed the end of his strike: “I want to thank everyone who stood by me these 23 days — for their support, for their love. Our struggle will continue, always together.”
He also called for a public gathering in Syntagma Square on Wednesday (Oct. 8) to celebrate what he described as a “great victory.”
