The next versions of ChatGPT will offer erotic content to verified adult users, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced yesterday in a post on X. It remains unclear what types of material (text, photos, videos) will be included in the erotic content, which Altman referred to as “erotica.” The move represents a major shift in the company’s policy, which had previously prohibited such material, and will follow the gradual rollout of age verification tools on ChatGPT starting in December.
The change will come after the company installs age verification systems, with Altman stating that OpenAI has now “contained the serious mental health issues” among users and can “safely relax the restrictions,” allowing ChatGPT to respond “more humanly” when adult users wish it to.
One in five students under 12 in the UK says they or someone they know has a romantic relationship with an AI chatbot, according to research.
The announcement follows the creation of two explicitly sexual AI chatbots on Elon Musk’s Grok, and the new feature is intended to attract more paying subscribers. However, it will also increase pressure on governments to introduce legislation regulating AI chatbots with respect to children, as well as on OpenAI itself to ensure effective age verification. Critics doubt the company’s ability to completely prevent minors from accessing adult-only features.
Studies show that children tend to treat AI chatbots as if they were human, with one in five students under 12 in the UK reporting that they or someone they know has a romantic relationship with an AI chatbot, according to recent research.
