Research says that the daily intake of multivitamins for at least two years may slow certain indicators of biological aging, although to a small degree, which helps in the prevention of diseases related to biological age.

While chronological age is based on how long a person has lived, biological age reflects the condition of the body. Estimates for the latter are often based on changes in DNA that accumulate with age and affect the function of genes.

Of course, Dr Howard Sesso, epidemiologist in the department of medicine at Mass General Brigham and main author of the study, stated that the findings do not mean that all elderly people should take multivitamins.

Biological aging is the gradual deterioration of bodily and cellular functions, which often does not coincide with chronological age.

“There are no known risks from taking multivitamins in our two large clinical trials. At the same time, we do not know with certainty who benefits and in what way,” he said.

The researchers took as a sample 958 people and found that in 2 years, those who were taking multivitamins daily had better results than those who were taking a placebo, slowing biological aging by 4 months.

They themselves stressed that further research is required in order to investigate whether the specific results that were observed for multivitamins are actually related to significant clinical benefits.
