After 12 days of continuous clashes, Israel and Iran appear to have agreed on a ceasefire.
The agreement came shortly after Iran launched a missile attack on the US base Al Udeid in Qatar (the largest US base in the Middle East) last night, in retaliation for the US strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities on Sunday.
There were no casualties from the attack, and US President Donald Trump issued a statement thanking Iran for the “early notice”.
After midnight on Monday, Trump announced that the ceasefire would be implemented gradually starting Tuesday, but did not specify the terms.
A few hours later, he issued a second statement confirming that the ceasefire had begun and called on both countries not to violate it.
Early Tuesday morning, Iran was the first to announce its acceptance of the ceasefire, with the Iranian Foreign Minister stating that the Iranian military fought until the “very last minute.”
Shortly after, the agreement was also confirmed by Iranian state television.
The ceasefire was “tested” in the early hours as Israeli authorities reported that Iranian missiles struck an apartment building in the city of Beersheba, killing at least four people.
Eventually, Israel agreed to Donald Trump’s ceasefire proposal with Iran on Tuesday morning.
The Israeli Prime Minister stated that his country had achieved a dual objective: neutralizing the Iranian nuclear and ballistic missile threat, and thanked Trump for his assistance.
Although the two countries have agreed to a ceasefire, the situation remains tense.
The Israeli Defense Minister announced that new missiles fired by Iran were detected 2.5 hours after the ceasefire began, accusing Iran of a “blatant violation” of the agreement.
He ordered the Israeli army to continue attacks against Iranian paramilitary and government targets.
So, for now, things in the Middle East are still very much undecided.
