Daniel Day-Lewis, widely regarded as one of the greatest actors, is returning to cinema seven years after his retirement from acting. In June 2017, his spokesperson announced his decision to step away from the industry, just months before the release of Phantom Thread, his final film, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.
Day-Lewis will now star in Anemone, the directorial debut of his son, Ronan Day-Lewis, with whom he co-wrote the screenplay. According to the production company, the film “explores the complex relationships between fathers, sons, and brothers, as well as the dynamics of family bonds.” It is currently being filmed in Manchester and features a cast including Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley, and Safia Oakley-Green.
D. Day-Lewis, W. Brennan, and J. Nicholson are the only actors to have won three Oscars for Best Actor.
Daniel Day-Lewis, known for his commitment to the “method acting” technique, has won three Academy Awards for Best Actor for his roles as disabled Irish writer Christy Brown in My Left Foot, oilman Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood, and Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln. This was his second break from acting, having previously stepped away from film between 1997 and 2000 to learn shoemaking in Florence.
