In Lesvos a case of foot-and-mouth disease was detected in cattle and now the island has been designated as a surveillance zone and the movement of animals, animal products and animal feed outside is prohibited.
“It is very important that the case was detected on an island and not in mainland Greece, therefore it is easier to observe the strict measures that we put into implementation, so that there will be no further spread of the disease,” states the Ministry of Rural Development.
The disease is not transmitted to humans, however the European directive, as there is no treatment, is that all the animals of the unit where the case was detected are to be killed.
Foot-and-mouth disease is a viral disease that affects mainly hoofed animals (cows, goats etc.), which is transmitted rapidly (also through the air).
“We are determined to implement the most strict measures in order to avoid the worst,” stressed to “K” the general secretary of the ministry, Spyros Protopsaltis. As regards the way of transmission of the virus to productive animals in Lesvos, Mr. Protopsaltis points out that the veterinary services are still in the process of tracing, therefore there are no relevant data.
It is being examined, however, whether the case originated from illegal import of animals from Turkey, while Cyprus has been in quarantine since the day before yesterday due to spread of the disease.
